to save or to live...

tpau and
learnedax grabbed
dkapell and I to have dinner at
metahacker's house. This was done in part because it was a good social thing to do, in part because I needed to meet the illustrious
metahacker, and in part because there's going to be a rentable room opening up there about the time I want to move.
And what a temptation it is.
I had a good time there.
brynndragon wasn't home, but I have met her and find her a nifty person,
metahacker came off as extremely awesome, and <lj user=what'sherusernameifshehasone?> was frazzled with an upcoming trip but still came off and sweet and interesting. They have a nice big house with plenty of space (and yards!), a decent-sized room, and a piano.
But.
The rent there would be over $100 more than what I'm being offered to go elsewhere. It's in Waltham and I don't have a car - meaning I'd either have to rely on the commuter rail (expensive) or busses (time-expensive) to get to where I work (and I foresee more Boston-centric temp jobs in my future). It would be difficult for
londo to visit for the same reasons - either he'd have to take two commuter rails, or a rail and a bus, or two busses. Way too much hassle.
Basically, unless I can get a real (read: secure, not temp) job right there in Waltham that pays well, it's not a good idea. My first life priority is to get out of debt, and that means going for the cheaper option, even if it's not as fun/desirable.
Plus, the cheaper option might lead to living with
kobold, and that's just awesome.

on 26 May 2004 08:49 (UTC)How far off is the price?
What are your salary requirements?
Bounce me a resume? (metahacker@ l j works) I'll scrounge around the area.

on 26 May 2004 10:51 (UTC)The price difference is $120/mo ($570 is what you quoted me, correct? It's $450 in Somerville.)
My salary requirements are... well, right now I'm doing 40 hrs/wk for $13/hr and I'm not complaining. I've never made more than $14k/year after taxes. I'd really like to make more, of course, but as long as I'm making $1000/month I can live. (Making more means getting out of debt faster, which is very nice. Also means getting into car-payment debt, if I make enough. Ah, to have a car again...)
Resume incoming. Thanks for looking.
