A random Angel quote made me pause the DVD and tear up.

The Host: [explaining to young man why freezing time, even at a 'good moment', is a bad idea] It's like a song. Now, I can hold a note for a long time... actually, I can hold a note forever. But eventually, that's just noise. It's the change we're listening for. The note coming after, and the one after that. That's what makes it music.

For some reason, I think that's beautiful.

That's so totally true. I've been learning a lot about that, recently. Like, certain chord progressions actually make their impact AFTER you hear them. And 90% of what makes good music is balancing the line between giving people what they expect to hear, and giving them something which is shocking.

What if I want to hear something shocking? ;)

Listen to Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli. Unless you are a) a musician, and b) have listened to it about 20 times, it will be quite shocking. But cool. My brother describes it as "music for musicians". Which it so is.
