Home from seeing Repo! The Genetic Opera.
Holy shit.
I can't say it's the best movie ever made. It is definitely NOT the worst movie ever made. I do think it is an important movie to be made. I am definitely pleased to have seen it on opening night, with the creators there to discuss it afterwards and say some really interesting things. Also, Terrance Zdunich is freakin' hot - ask
rigel ;)
Things of note:
*It is NOT actually that horror/slashy. There is some gore, but it is the background of the movie, letting the music and the characterizations take over. There is comic-book-like graphics that even take over at points to lessen the effect of the violence when the point is not the violence, but rather character A getting to point B and happening to run into violence along the way.
*Every single cast member is amazing in his or her role.
*The experience as a crowded midnight showing with a bunch of jackasses was mixed. As I hadn't listened to the soundtrack previously, if people were shouting over lyrics andor dialogue, I missed it. And there were some folks trying way, way too hard to come up with callbacks. I, however, completely pwned two callbacks and consider myself a winner for the evening. The first one I can share with you, and will gladly if it will catch on: the opening scene starts with the words, "In the not-too-distant future..." At this point, you either know the next line or you don't, but miraculously I was the only one who thought to shout it. Sheesh! The second line is more spoilerish, so I will hide it.
*Bring blue glowsticks.
*SO MANY COSPLAY OPPORTUNITIES. I wonder if I can whip up a Blind Mag at Opera outfit by Arisia. Sample screenshot. Ooh, and cast photo. So yeah. Feathers, corset, fishnets, boots, mesh cape, teased hair, studded leather collar and cuffs, eye makeup, fake eyelashes, and maybe even costume contacts? Oh yeah. Perhaps if I had less on my plate... Oh man. Does anyone want to dress me up? I'll pay for it, I just don't have the time to collect all those items. ;)
*Yay soundtrack.

At the moment when Shilo sees the Repo Man take off his mask and reveal he is her father, there is a hush both on-screen and probably generally in the audience as well. This is the perfect time for, "Shilo... I am your father," a la Star Wars. It went over really well. |
