A few days late, but updates on what happened last Saturday...
Dar Williams was the headliner at the Boston Folk Festival at the UMass Boston campus. Getting into the festival for one day was $30... but it was free if you signed up for 4 hours of volunteer work. Which
londo and I did. Yay, free.
I want to take this moment to point out that when he and I first learned about this show 7ish months ago, we made plans to attend together no matter whether we were still dating or just friends by this time. Happily it's the former. :)
We met up on the subway (he was coming from Worcester) and got ourselves to the campus, where everything was in disarray because the outdoor festival had to be moved due to rain. We eventually found the volunteer check-in and got our shirts - but not assignments. Turned out they actually had more people than they needed. We were told to just wait around until someone needed us. We were more than happy to do so.
After sitting and chatting (and raiding the free volunteer food) for an hour, we were asked to go along with someone to move a stage into a new room. We walked around campus, and then were told to sit and wait some more. About 30 minutes more. Finally a group met up to talk about the upcoming stage setup - which was in another 30 minutes. We were waiting for some kind of standardized testing to end in a large ballroom so that we could move risers, chairs, etc in there. So after getting the plan, we got to go fool around for another 30 minutes. ;)
At this point I was wandering through the vendors and saw a shirt that I thought
londo would like, so I had it held for me until I could come back later with my checkbook. Later I came back with
londo himself in tow and bought him a shirt - not the one I had picked out, but another that was similarly brightly colored and garish and fun. Sadly I've forgotten to take a picture of it, but perhaps I'll get one online soon.
Anyway, we went back for the room setup. It was ~45 minutes of physical labor, moving stacks of chairs and tables and setting a small concert hall up. We finished right about 2pm. Our volunteer shift was supposed to be until 3... but it became obvious that our last hour would just be more sitting and waiting. So we went to sit and wait at one of the concerts. ;) (Dar and three others were doing a midday show of cover songs.)
We got out of that about 3:15 and browsed more vendors until 5. Saw many things I thought were pretty but not necessarily my style.
londo thought the same about many of the dresses... I'm glad that he likes me no matter what I wear. :)
Dar was supposed to start at 5, but when we got there the previous band was still playing... she didn't start until almost 5:30! We couldn't find seats at all until I capitalized on the fact that we had helped set up that room, and went to the chair storage closet and just got us two extra chairs. Heehee. Then Dar played!
I don't know a whole bunch of her music, so I only recognized a few of the songs she performed, but she did perform two of the three that I wanted to hear (Are You Out There? and February, but not Pointless Yet Poignant). Two of her songs also made me cry (February and End of the Summer).
londo is a bigger fan of hers (he introduced me to her) and said that he was pleased with the selection of songs that she played.
She finished in time for us to catch a bus at 7:30 that took us straight to Kenmore Square - They Might Be Giants was playing at Avalon on Landsdowne. We were in communication with
etherial via phone text messages, so we knew we weren't too late - I think we missed 2 or 3 songs. By the time we got there there was no way of joining
etherial and his friend in the middle of the dance floor, so we just hung around the back trying to find a good place to stand and have view.
londo had to get earplugs, the show was so loud...
I had a good time, although I don't think the show was as great as previous TMBG shows I've been to. Perhaps this is because
londo wasn't feeling well by that time (he hadn't slept since the previous afternoon).
After the show we went with
etherial and his friend to the Uno's in Kenmore Square to eat and chat... and then back home.
londo wanted to walk instead of take the bus from the subway so we had a nice walk in the nighttime streets. It was a great end to a great day.
