gonna try it again
15 April 2002 07:38I'm not sure how many of you know how much of a marching band geek I was in high school. Certainly those people who went to school with me then, and who read this now, know (Troy, Jed, Scott, Nick, maybe Brian and Ryan?). Contemplating this decision I recently made, I called Jason up to talk to him about it. I told him that if I were to list the things in life that have made me happiest over the years, he would take first place but I really wouldn't know if the cats or participation in marching band would take second. I liked it that much.
Why did I prefer it over symphonic? I don't know. I just know that I did. I hated getting up early in the mornings, I hated most of the politics and heirarchy involved, but damn... When you're standing on the field at the end of a show, having just snapped your horn down, and you know you've marched a perfect show... I really don't know that I've felt like that since my last stint on a football field. Even Gaea Spore shows haven't quite done that for me, but maybe that's just because I haven't played a perfect one yet ;)
Anyway, my marching band stint ended fall of 2000. I tried out for the Pride, got in, and was able to march in one home game and attend one away game. Then my car accident happened, and it's quite hard to march with a broken leg. I had to withdraw from classes that semester, too, and since then I've just been trying to catch up with school and money and didn't have the time with classes and work to schedule it. Or haven't made the time.
Anyway, in case you hadn't already guessed, I decided to make the time to audition for the Pride again next fall. That means a few things for my schedule (if I make it in, that is). First off, I won't be going back to Saxon. I just don't have the time in the day to go there and justify it. I'll have classes from 8:30-12:30 on MWF and 10:30-1:15 TR (this involved a bit of shuffling of my schedule, but it works!), and then Pride rehearsals from 4:30 to 6:00 on MWRF. I like the big blank space in the middle there, it leaves me nap room. I hope to come back to work at the lab, and also at Papa John's.
The only thing I worry about is social time. Maybe it's dumb of me, but I want to assume that there will be someone in Norman who will want to hang out with me at least one night of the week. I think it's fairly simple to make sure I don't work EVERY night, though. Actually, that's almost a definite, since I have to do homework sometime ;). And game day Saturdays are out, but hey...
So this means a few things for my summer: I have to practice my horn regularly. Maybe even get some lessons in Boston. I should also get in better shape, mainly my arm muscles, because I know one of the hardest parts for me is keeping my horn up for extended amounts of time. ;) Finally, I will have to be back in town for 'band camp' (tryouts) on August 20.
If I don't make it, I won't cry. But if I do, maybe I will. *smile*
