This was on [livejournal.com profile] thetathx1138's LJ, and literally made my jaw drop. It's a ~5 minute talk by Pattie Maes from MIT's Media Lab on a "Sixth Sense" device under construction; a wearable method of interacting with the world around you and the internet at the same time. The second half of the video is really where things start to get crazy. Please do watch.

Pattie was one of my wife's PhD advisors when she was doing her work on neural works. I'm glad to see she's truly progressing with advancing augmented reality as combining it with a full glasses HUD setup instead of the standard eyeTap, will allow for near full overlays of real-life data supplements in visual and (hopefully) gesture recognition manipulatable form.

hah! that’s AWESOME.

so, it occurs to me that i want two enhancements:

  1. i want it to project onto the inside of my glasses, scaling appropriately so that the HUD info is overlaid onto my field of vision, and ideally watching my eyes to refocus appropriately for depth of field.

  2. i want it to be able to communicate with me more subtly and silently (vibrating, making my skin tingle, changing temperature, whatever) so that when i encounter a situation that it’s trying to warn me about, the warning isn’t necessarily obvious to the people around me. i wonder how difficult it is to mechanically induce mild nausea in a person?

thank you for showing me this. :)

TED is incredible. If you subscribe to podcasts, theirs is a podcast to hit up.

That's pretty freakin' cool. And I second the recommendation of checking out more TED Talks, because they're frequently fascinating.
