Ode to Billy Joe

dervish: In the spirit of the last post, although not something I read as a child, I just bought the one copy of Ode to Billy Joe that Amazon.com had. Did you know there's a movie, too? I can't tell if the book is based on the movie or vice-versa. Time to do some digging.

To most of you in the Boston area: if you are at all interested in a book that without fail makes me cry, let me know, and you can borrow it when I'm done.

Forgive me if, by asking this, I happen to demonstrate a horrific degree of ignorance about your life, but... I don't know the book, but I know the song, and I wonder - does it make you cry for personal reasons, or just because you find it sad? I.e., was there someone you knew who committed suicide?

I cry because the book is sad; it is not a personal connection.

Although, I suppose it becomes personal in that when I read books, watch movies, etc, a large chunk of me becomes wrapped in a, "What if that were me?" type scenario... which tends to elicit strong emotional reactions, of course.

Heh, well, I certainly hope I gave it back to you after I finished with it, but I'm sure I did. I'll let you know if I find it in one of MY boxes of books!

a-ha. The movie is also buy-able on Amazon for like $20, but I dunno. Perhaps if income were more disposable.
