Papa John's wants to hire me!!!

I guess they were just waiting for me to call back. I called and talked to a boy, and he got my name and went to get the manager, and came back and said, "Just come in next week sometime with a copy of your license, insurance, social security card, and MVR, and fill out paperwork, and you can start next week.

WOOHOO!

Monday, baby. That's when I start.

(happy) sigh. Money! I need it so badly. Who will take my tips and turn them into checks that I can pay bills with? Anyone?

Congratulations:) Why do you need cheques to pay bills? You must have a different system to us.. we take our bills to the postoffice or branch of whoever sent us the bill and give them money or eftpos it with a keycard or creditcard. They scan the barcode and give us a receipt.. unless we do it online. Do you need to send cheques for everything? I noticed Rachel said she was going to pay for something with a cheque too.

Well, the bills I pay aren't simple things like gas, electricity, and water. They are insurance company and car payment and credit card payment. Those things have to be mailed in (well, I can pay the car payment in town, but the bank is across town and has dumb hours). And mailing in cash is bad... I don't know what "eftpos" means.

I can do some of my things online, like I pay my phone bill online which is nice, and I don't need checks for that.

Oh, and while I don't really need a check for rent, I don't want to go in with $200 in $1s and $5s from delivering pizza and make them count it all. Much better to give it to a friend who will keep it in their wallet for use for food and fun, and who will give me one big check to give to the bursar's office and reduce the hassle.

Effective(I think) Fund Transaction At Point Of Sale.. when you use a keycard or credit card to pay for something at a register. I thought it was a global name for it but apparently not. Do you ever pay for things using a keycard? I pay for car insurance and credit card bills and stuff through eftpos too.

I don't think I've ever written a cheque in my life.. it seems really old-fashioned, but probably because my parents do it. Does it take cheques a week to clear there like it does here?

Well, they take a little while to clear, but not always a week. The checks I write to the thai place every monday are cleared on thursdays or fridays... it just depends on how fast the banks are, and when the person gives the check to the bank.

I like how we can have a conversation about checks and cheques :)

So how do you get cash from your bank account.. do you go to the bank and withdraw it? Do you not use atms?

Of course we have ATMs :) We get money out of them by using our ATM cards. Maybe those are what you call keycards? We call them ATM or debit cards. They're not accepted at as many places as credit cards, but many places (like Walmart - which is like Target except a larger corporation, and some of the stores have groceries too - large grocery stores, some restaurants, etc) take them. You have to put in your PIN to make the transaction.

added to this is the complication that most people don't have (merely) debit cards, they have what are called check cards. a check card has a major credit card logo on it (mine has visa), but the money comes directly from your checking account at the bank (like a debit card/eftpos card). this check card is used at the ATM as well. i used my check cards to pay for everything while i was travelling, because visa is accepted worldwide. if i'd just had a debit card, i would have been out of luck.

so basically, our debit cards are less useful than your eftpos cards, because most places won't take them (here), but our check cards are more useful because they are accepted just like a credit card.

yes! that's what we do! Crikey, I was starting to think we lived on different planets.Yes, keycards are debit cards etc.. except here they're accepted everywhere, just about. You almost don't need to carry paper money.

Our credit cards can access our debit accounts - one card for multiple accounts.

Aha! Yeah, with credit cards here (and the check cards goldbug was talking about... credit/debit cards in one!) you don't really need cash either. The thai place I eat at only takes cash and checks, though.
