That is terrible! I can think of a number of reasons why that is a BAD idea:
1. You have massive droves of people in boot-camps. This is bad because either there will now be an additional 2-3k boot-camp cities, or there will be a mirror of big-city public education problems. End result: Very dangerous & bitter mal-contents. (I would be one, myself.)
2. The military suddenly has control/influence over a *very* large percentage of the population. We would indeed end up living in a military state. I certainly wouldn't want to live in Sparta.
3. This bill would set precedent for the government to use to continue to make Life Decisions for the populous. Obvious why that is bad.
4. Cultural/Ethnic differences will cause a great deal of trouble both inside and outside the camps--possibly result in segregation? (I'm thinking of that percentage of the nation whom are racial bigots and usually forgoe military {or any effort-required} endeavors.)

I would go on, but it is time for class. This is very disturbing, and I pray that it never sees the light of day.

Yeah, I really can't imagine anyone at all thinking this is a good idea. *shudder*

I'm not for this, but it I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment. I doesn't seem like they are pushing for required military service, but more of an extension of public education - to include some training in military issues (personal antiterrorism comes to mind) as well as international relations. The obvious goal would be to create a more globally aware generation of American youth. On the racism issue, I would like to note that in my experience, 99% of racial problems dissipate instantly when people are faced with a greater enemy (i.e. the "boot camp" itself).

Don't think I'm THE MAN or anything, this definitely not the right way to do something like this, and it certainly shouldn't be 100% mandatory, but I think that maybe something similar, perhaps rolled into the public education system, would be beneficial to this country.

Who here likes Europe and thinks alot of Europe is good? Guess what, alot of those countries, which appear totally normal to us, do this. It's not a bad idea at all. I had a foreign exchange student at my high school who was looking forward to doing this for his country. Now granted some people are gonna hate this and some are gonna love it but I think overall it'd be a good benefit to society, or maybe I'm just jealous because I couldn't join the marines like I wanted.

You know, for being Malaclypse's bitch, you're a pretty smart guy. But count your blessings that you didn't end up in the Marines. That is, unless you mean on 3k.

It is interesing to note that Israel, which requires 2 years of service from all high school graduates, has one of the most educated under-40 workforces in the world.

Whoa whoa whoa. He's MY bitch. And I meant marines IRL, me and my cousin both signed up within a month of each other but I had them delay my ship date until almost 6 months after signing so I could finish HS. Me and him like all the same shit and worked out together for a long time and he's handling it fine so I'm fairly confident I wouldn't have had any problem. Now it's a different story since after surgery I lost all motivation to do shit and put on another 40 lbs :-P

I don't see a huge problem with this. No one is going to get broken by six months of service. Isreal does this for everyone for two years and they still have their various political factions.
End result: Very dangerous & bitter mal-contents. (I would be one, myself.)

Not just dangerous and bitter mal-contents, militarily trained mal-contents. Of course a large group of people did the forced conscription thing back in the fifties and sixties and they didn't turn out horribly so I'm not too worried.

Where I see the problem is funding. This kind of thing would be EXPENSIVE AS HELL. Just not worth it for the results.

I'm more against forced service (community or otherwise) on the principal that if a country can't be maintained on volunteers for it's needs then something is wrong. Example: Roman mothers used to tell their sons "Come back with your shield or on it." After a while they stopped pushing this (loyalty to your country). Rome declined. Remember, loyalty to your country doesn't mean mindless devotion. It means loving it enough to work to fix what's broken. "America Love it or Leave it" are the words of a fool.
